Whipped Feta Dip
Whipped feta should be creamy enough to drag a pita chip through, but still thick enough to hold a swoop from the back of a spoon. Greek yogurt gives the salty cheese a smoother base; the main thing to control is extra liquid.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- 8 oz (226 g) block feta, drained
- 1/2 cup (120 g) full-fat Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
- 1 small garlic clove, finely grated
- 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
- Black pepper, to taste
- Chopped parsley or mint, optional
- Pita, crackers or vegetables, for serving
How to Make Whipped Feta Dip
- Step 1.
Crumble feta into a food processor. Add Greek yogurt, lemon juice, zest, garlic and black pepper.
- Step 2.
Process 45–60 seconds, scrape the bowl, then process again until smooth and creamy.
- Step 3.
With the machine running, drizzle in 2 tbsp olive oil and process only until incorporated. Stop once the dip is smooth; prolonged processing can loosen the texture.
- Step 4.
Spread into a shallow bowl. Drizzle with a little olive oil and add herbs if using. Taste before adding salt because feta is naturally salty.
The texture is the whole recipe
Feta does not become silky on its own the way cream cheese does. It starts crumbly and salty, so the yogurt is doing more than adding tang: it gives the processor enough creamy material to turn those crumbles into a cohesive dip. A good finished batch should look smooth, mound softly on a spoon and stay where you spread it.
If it looks grainy after the first minute, scrape the bowl and keep going briefly. If it is already smooth, stop. More processing is not automatically better once the texture is there.

Why block feta is the better starting point
Pre-crumbled feta is convenient, but it is often drier and can be coated to keep the pieces separate. A drained block tends to give you a more predictable, creamy result. The feta is also the main source of salt, so taste the finished dip before deciding it needs any more.
Lemon juice and zest do different jobs
The juice brightens the rich dairy base, while the zest adds lemon aroma without adding much more liquid. That distinction matters in a whipped dip: you can easily make the flavor brighter, but every wet ingredient also nudges the texture looser.
The same rule applies to optional additions. Roasted peppers, harissa, pesto or other flavorful mix-ins can work, but drain or reduce wet ingredients and add them gradually rather than turning a thick dip into a sauce.
Serving it for a party
Use a shallow bowl rather than a deep one so guests can scoop without digging. A drizzle of olive oil, cracked pepper and a little mint or parsley make the surface look finished without changing the structure. Pita wedges, sturdy crackers, cucumber, peppers and carrots all work well; very thin chips can break against a cold, thick batch.
If the dip has been refrigerated, give it about 10 minutes at room temperature and stir once before serving. It will usually relax slightly as it loses its refrigerator chill.
Useful changes
Different yogurt: another thick plain yogurt can work, but thinner yogurt will produce a looser result. Richer version: replacing a small amount of yogurt with cream cheese makes the dip denser and milder. Herbs: mint is brighter; parsley is more neutral and keeps the feta at the center.
Make ahead and storage
This is an easy make-ahead dip because there is no crisp component to protect. Refrigerate it airtight for up to 3 days. Stir before serving and refresh the top with olive oil and herbs rather than mixing a large amount of garnish into the stored dip.

Use block feta when possible. Greek yogurt softens the feta and helps create a creamy base; wet add-ins can loosen the dip, so add them conservatively. Taste before salting.
